Language Arts

Taught by: David Blair

The curriculum for English incorporates reading, writing, literature, and communication. JGEMS will provide a variety of learning experiences that will enable students to fully develop skills and knowledge in English as they pursue curriculum goals in social studies, math, science, and conservation biology. The sixth grade English curriculum will focus on strengthening basic skills in reading and writing. Connections to ancient cultures will be made through a study of their myths and legends. Students advance their sense of place, a conservation biology goal, by developing their own journal writing skills as they study the journals of Thoreau, Leopold, Goodall, Schaller, and others. The seventh grade English curriculum will support the process of skill refinement in the areas of reading and writing, and provide students with a widening exposure to appropriate literature. Studies in geography will be made more immediate and relevant by written communication with students and schools in other countries. English curriculum for eighth grade students will provide the platform for skill mastery and the successful completion of state and district Benchmark III assessments. JGEMS eighth grade students will have the responsibility of developing and maintaining the JGEMS website, connecting our school with a global learning community.
